Harness this powerful tool alongside the unparalleled versatility of Procreate brushes to elevate your digital art to new heights of precision and creativity.
This tutorial is dedicated to guiding you through the steps of using Drawing Assist to craft a geometric pattern, ensuring flawless execution with every line.
Step 1: Setting Up Your Canvas
Open Procreate and tap the “+” icon to create a new canvas. Choose a size that suits your project. For this tutorial, a square canvas (2048 x 2048 pixels) works well.
Once your canvas is ready, you’ll see your workspace. Before we start drawing, let’s set up our grid.

Step 2: Enabling Drawing Guide
Tap on the wrench icon (Actions) in the top left corner of the screen.
Select “Canvas” from the menu.
Toggle on “Drawing Guide.” You’ll see a basic grid appear on your canvas.
To customize this grid, tap on “Edit Drawing Guide.” Here, you can adjust the grid size, color, and opacity to match your needs. For geometric patterns, a smaller grid size can be very helpful.
After adjusting your settings, tap “Done” in the bottom right corner.

Step 3: Activating Drawing Assist
Open the Layers Panel, and you’ll see your current layer is named “Layer 1.”
Tap on “Layer 1” to bring up the layer options, and select “Drawing Assist.” You’ll notice a small “Assisted” label appears on your layer, indicating Drawing Assist is now active for this layer.

Step 4: Creating Your Geometric Pattern
Select the Brush Tool and choose a brush that suits your style. The “Studio Pen” under Inking is a good choice for clean, crisp lines.
Now, begin drawing your geometric pattern. With Drawing Assist enabled, you’ll notice your lines snap to the grid, helping you maintain precise distances and angles. This is particularly useful for creating symmetrical designs.
Experiment with shapes and lines. Drawing Assist will ensure your elements are aligned with the grid, making it easier to create complex patterns.

Step 5: Using Symmetry
For symmetrical designs, go back to your Drawing Guide settings (Wrench icon > Canvas > Edit Drawing Guide).
Tap on “Symmetry” under Options. You can choose between Vertical, Horizontal, Quadrant, or Radial symmetry. Each option offers a unique way to mirror your drawings.
After selecting your symmetry type, ensure “Assisted Drawing” is toggled on, then tap “Done.”
Start drawing on your canvas, and watch as Procreate mirrors your strokes according to the symmetry option you chose. This is perfect for creating intricate, symmetrical patterns effortlessly.

Step 6: Adding Colors and Details
Once you’re satisfied with your pattern’s structure, it’s time to add colors and details. Create a new layer for coloring by tapping the “+” icon in the Layers Panel.
Make sure “Drawing Assist” is turned off for this layer if you want freeform coloring. Alternatively, keep it on for precise, symmetrical coloring.
Use the Color Picker to select colors and the Brush Tool to fill in your pattern. You can create multiple layers for different colors or details to keep your project organized.

Step 7: Finalizing Your Artwork
Once your design is complete, you can adjust the opacity of different layers, blend colors, or add final touches as needed.
To save or share your artwork, tap the wrench icon, select “Share,” and choose your preferred format (PNG, JPEG, etc.).
Using Drawing Assist in Procreate can significantly streamline the process of creating geometric patterns, symmetrical designs, or any artwork requiring precision.

Feel free to experiment with the different settings and tools to discover new possibilities for your creative projects. Happy drawing!
